Description
A poet whose life traced the hopes and disillusionments of an entire era. David Leeming’s Stephen Spender: A Life in Modernism is a richly detailed biography of one of the twentieth century’s most fascinating cultural figures.
Spender was a poet, autobiographer, literary critic, and journalist — but also a public intellectual who stood at the center of modernism’s great debates. A friend of W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, and T. S. Eliot, he moved between poetry and politics, art and activism, wrestling with questions of commitment, conscience, and creative freedom that defined his generation.
Drawing on letters, diaries, and interviews, Leeming follows Spender from the bright promise of the 1930s through war, controversy, and reinvention — revealing a man of deep sincerity whose passion for literature never wavered, even when the world around him did. Essential reading for anyone interested in modern poetry, literary history, and the artists who tried to change the world with words.
