Description
A friendship with one of literature’s most controversial writers — remembered by the woman who lived it. In March 1924, D. H. Lawrence, his wife Frieda, and the Honorable Dorothy Brett — artist, aristocrat, and devoted friend — travelled to Taos, New Mexico. Lawrence and Brett is Brett’s intimate memoir of that extraordinary bond: her years alongside one of the twentieth century’s most provocative literary figures.
Brett writes with the eye of a painter and the candor of a close friend. She recalls Lawrence at work and at rest — his brilliance, his temper, his tenderness — and the circle of artists and writers drawn to Taos in the 1920s. First published in 1933, her account remains one of the most vivid personal portraits of Lawrence ever written.
For readers of literary biography and memoir, this is an essential companion to Lawrence’s own work and to the story of the Taos art colony: warm, revealing, and beautifully observed.
