Combat Artist a Journal of Love and War by Alexander Russo

Description

War seen through an artist’s eyes — and love that survived it. Combat Artist: A Journal of Love and War is Alexander Russo’s remarkable memoir of his years as a combat artist with Naval Intelligence, documenting history with a sketchbook in one hand and a serviceman’s duty in the other.

Born in Atlantic City in 1922, Russo joined the Naval Reserve and was assigned the rare, demanding role of combat artist: capturing the scenes, faces, and emotions of wartime that no camera could. His journal entries — straightforward, honest, and deeply human — reveal the daily life of servicemen, the weight of duty, and the creative impulse that refused to be silenced by war. Woven through it all is a love story: the relationship that sustained him across oceans and uncertainty.

Published in 2013, decades after the events, this is both a historical document and a personal testament — for readers of military history and memoir alike, an uncommon and moving find.
