Description
THE TEA LEAVES UNDER ANAS’S SHADOW: A Novel
This science-fiction novel excerpt introduces Leaf Rowan, a monk and traveling tea minister on the planet Calyx, who begins to suffer from a profound, nameless exhaustion despite living in a sustainable utopia. Tasked by their Order to investigate why frontier tea plants have suddenly lost their flavor, Rowan leaves the familiar Settlements to “taste the land” along the boundary of the Wilds. During this journey, Rowan discovers that the planet’s hidden ecological infrastructure is failing, manifesting as a distorted vibration in the ancient cable-roots that link the world. At the edge of human territory, Rowan encounters Gilt-Joint Calder, a sentient brass robot who has also noticed this systemic “wrong note.” The two specialists—one human and one machine—form an unlikely partnership to diagnose why their world has begun to lie. This developing bond bridges a three-hundred-year divide between humanity and the Robot Collective, as they both seek to understand what it means to desire more within a society that already has “enough.”
